Why serve cage-free eggs |
|
Australians eat three billion eggs every year. 72% (or 2.1 billion) of these eggs come from hens housed in battery cages. Unable to express their natural behaviours, battery farmed hens are unarguably the most compromised of all farm animals. They live their year long lives standing on a wire mesh floor and in less space than the size of an A4 piece of paper. Caged hens can’t preen their feathers, stretch out or flap their wings, perch, roost, dust bathe, forage for food or satisfy their natural urge to lay their eggs in a nest. Businesses can serve eggs and still care for the welfare of the hens. There are alternative systems that are more humane and provide hens with the freedom to move and express their natural behaviours. Consumers are increasingly demanding higher welfare food products and are supporting those businesses that make good animal welfare a priority. Every egg you serve will make a difference to hens in cages and show your customers that you care about animal welfare. Benefits of joiningBy joining the RSPCA’s campaign to get hens out of cages you are telling your customers that you care about the welfare of animals. Your business will also be:
