Consumer trends
In Australia and around the world, consumers are becoming more aware about where their food comes from and how their food was produced. As a result they are demanding food produced to high animal welfare standards.
2 in 3 Australians are concerned about confinement of layer hens and pigs and 3 in 4 Australians are concerned about the live export of animals for slaughter. Right now there is a new market for higher welfare food. Consumers equate higher welfare products with higher quality which allows for product differentiataion.
Across the developed world there are moves to get hens out of cages, but the leader in this area is the European Union (EU). In the United Kingdom, approximately 40% of eggs are produced from hens that live cage-free. In Denmark and the Netherlands this figure is around 50%, in Sweden it's 60% and in Austria 70% of eggs are produced in cage-free systems. Unfortunately in Australia, hens will continue to be kept in barren battery cages for the foreseeable future, with less space each than the size of an A4 piece of paper and no ability to express basic behavioural needs. An unacceptable situation, but as a business owner you can make a difference.
In Australia, many businesses have already chosen to serve humane food by using products from higher welfare systems. The RSPCA's Choose Wisely initative is about recognising these efforts and encouraging others to join.
